Netflix’s new mobile games just might help it reclaim its space as the number one streaming venue against all of its competitors.

Browsing through Netflix the other day, like one does any afternoon, I found something entirely new to the Netflix platform: games. This seemed odd to me at first – why would a streaming service bother to break into the already competitive realm of mobile gaming? But upon reflection, it looks like it might just be a stroke of genius.

Since the late 90s, Netflix has been a dominant force in entertainment. It’s arguably a bit of an early 2000s zeitgeist. Their beginnings as a DVD rental service quickly evolved into an online streaming service with the growth of Big Tech platforms.

Although Netflix has historically had a grip on the streaming world, there has been a fairly recent shift as companies like Amazon, HBO, and Disney have created their own streaming services to catch up with Netflix. With content scattered across services, people are thinking twice about where they want to spend their monthly allowances. What makes Netflix better than Apple TV or Disney+? After all, Netflix doesn’t have “Ted Lasso” or “Ironman.” The release of mobile games could be the company’s answer to regain some control over the devotion of the population.

Netflix executives revealed the rationale for adding games to their platform, which was discussed in a CNBC article. They write about the increased entertainment value that adding games could add to their viewers, hinting at genuine intentions and a love for quality games.

But Alex Sherman, writer for CNBC, suggested an ulterior motive: data and intellectual property. Since these have been the keys to Netflix’s mainstream success in the past, it’s no surprise that they’re looking to use and improve upon the same strategies to create something new, while enticing customers to keep their memberships.

A post on the company’s blog, written by Netflix VP of Game Development, Mike Verdu, lays out the idea behind their mobile games. He presented the first five games launched: “Stranger Things: 1984”, “Stranger Things 3: The Game”, “Shooting Hoops”, “Card Blast”. and “Switch up.” Currently, there are 14 available to play. All of them were made in partnership with independent game studios specializing in different aesthetics.

Verdu went on to state its intentions for inclusion with the new service: “Whether you fancy a casual game you can start from scratch or an immersive experience that lets you dig deeper into your favorite stories, we want to start building a library of games that offers something for everyone.

Since Netflix competes for the attention of younger audiences with apps like TikTok and Instagram, it’s in their interest to appeal to a wide variety of demographics with their mobile games. By including mobile games as part of the subscription, they can reap the benefits of presenting an ad-free gaming experience. This could be an effective way to remain the best one-stop-shop for the widest variety of user demographics.

I tried playing one of their new games, called Krispee Street. It caught my attention because of the cute and relaxing animation style. With thousands of original hand-drawn creatures, Krispee Street takes you to a utopian world. Playing the game is low stakes: you match the respective character or item to its place in the level you choose. The crowded pastel-colored town I played in was like a “Where’s Waldo?” digital and meditative. experience.

Krispee Street is just one of 14 games currently included in a Netflix subscription. Although I only downloaded the app for research purposes, I can’t help but keep playing this adorable game as an insane stress reliever.
