Bangor’s Gamenetics brings creativity to video game controllers

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) — An award-winning Bangor company is bringing creativity to video game controllers.

Any gamer will tell you: you won’t get far without a trusted controller.

What if you could own it?

Oakley Kilgour started Gamenetics out of a shared interest with his brother.

Seven years later, it’s safe to say he’s improved.

“We went from selling 10 to 30 controllers a month in our parents’ basement at certain times of the year, we were selling thousands a month. We never imagined we would be able to be in the position we are in,” said Kilgour, CEO of Gamenetics.

A position that caught the attention of the Bangor Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Just to get some kind of local recognition, I know a lot of people here were really proud of it. It’s really cool,” Kilgour said.

The award recognizes entrepreneurial innovation and Gamenetics is definitely one of a kind.

“We have a customizer on the website and you can go there and change just about any color you want. You can add mods, buttons on the back, things like that,” Kilgour said.

Don’t ask him to pick a favorite.

“People always ask what my favorite is, I’m like, ‘Oh, those are kind of my favorite,’ and then what’ll happen is a customer will order one, and I look at it like, ‘Dude. , that’s really so much the better, I never would have thought of that!” said Kilgour.

Kilgour says the game offers a similar rush to other competitions.

“It’s kind of like any traditional sport where you just have to be able to compete with other people at your level and see an improvement. I don’t know, it’s just satisfying. It’s kind of nice to to be able to escape,” Kilgour said.

I’ve played video games in my day, from Mario Kart to Madden. But making my own gamepad? I’ve never done this before.

Call it beginner’s luck – mine passed the control test. But for the Gamenetics team, it’s all in a day’s work.

“Finding something around what you’re passionate about, what you really love, that was the biggest key for me. When I come to work every day, I love what I do every day. That’s so a really cool opportunity to be able to do that,” Kilgour said.
