Cyberpunk is a relatively new genre. Most will refer to William Gibson’s 1984 novel Neuromancer as a landmark work in cyberpunk, but its roots go further back to ’60s and’ 70s sci-fi writers like Phillip K Dick, JG Ballard, and Alice B Sheldon. (who wrote as James Tiptree Jr). Film and video game adaptations have followed suit, cementing some of the key visual cues we all recognize as cyberpunk today.

Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most famous example in video games – Gibson himself has finished comment on the trailer, saying it “hits me like skinned GTA with a generic ’80s retro-future.”

There are, of course, countless other cyberpunk games dating back to Konami’s Snatcher in 1988, and more that are in the works right now, like Citizen sleeper. It’s a narrative RPG set on a lawless interstellar space station on the edge of society, where you take on the role of a corporate-owned escaped consciousness. We spoke to Gareth Damian Martin, the solo developer of Citizen Sleeper, about what cyberpunk means in contemporary gaming.

“Even in its early days,” says Martin, “cyberpunk was built on so many existing parts of new wave sci-fi, literary noir, and beat generation style – it’s always wrong to cut it out of history and to treat it as a single branch of art and the media.

“At the same time, I think there is a contradiction here, because cyberpunk, when used as a descriptor in games, seems painfully reductive. Indeed, as with many aesthetically striking styles, cyberpunk visuals have been cannibalized and reused so many times that they have become an incredibly basic item list. A neon-lit, rainy, techno-orientalism megalopolis, implants, corporate control. We all know these elements so well that we can recognize them instantly, and within moments the descriptor “cyberpunk” will be applied.

it always hurts to eliminate cyberpunk from history and treat it as a unique branch of art

Gareth Damien Martin

Developer

“In games in particular,” says Martin, “because we’re talking about a very aesthetic medium, cyberpunk manifests itself visually, and in particular draws heavily on Blade Runner – just look at the recently announced Vigilance 2099.

“I think it’s very revealing that Blade Runner is the major influence, because in fact this movie does away with most of the more philosophical and literary cyberpunk elements from Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. He replaced them with elements of detective hokey gumshoe and a carefully honed aesthetic that together shattered the film noir mood and a new twist of orientalism and fascination with cities like Shanghai and Tokyo. This incredibly successful aesthetic, which owes much to designer Syd Mead, eclipsed any themes the film might have had and cemented its place as the eternal touchstone of sci-fi.

Citizen Sleeper cyberpunk gameplay

It’s important to note that Martin isn’t in love with the genre and they don’t necessarily want their game to be a part of it. They do appreciate Gibson’s work, however.

I see my work as a matter of hope, finding a place, a reason to continue

Gareth Damien Martin

Developer

“When I started working on Citizen Sleeper, I was rereading William Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy,” says Martin. “I started to feel like I wanted to do something that was inspired by so many things I loved about those books, without doing something explicitly cyberpunk. Could I do something Gibson inspired that didn’t? Do not do justice to the genre he helped create? For me, Gibson’s books are filled with strong qualities: the sharp and intimate prose, the emphasis on those on the fringes of society, the terrifying power of capital, the decaying megastructures that are home to thriving subcultures. I think all of this makes Gibson’s early work very relevant and exciting to read, even now. “

But Martin also believes there are plenty of unexplored ideas in the genre in general, which they hope to explore further in Citizen Sleeper. “In Gibson’s Sprawl books, hackers are more like mediums, who can contact the intangible forces that influence the physical world. I’ve always found it to be a more exciting take on cyberspace, and so in Citizen Sleeper I also tried to get a bit more involved in these ideas, placing the player as an intermediary between the physical and intangible – not like a hacker sitting behind a computer, but a being who can, just by closing his eyes, slip into a dream that lurks behind the physical reality of his surroundings.

Cover of the book Neuromancer by William Gibson

“For this reason, I think Citizen Sleeper connects with science fiction as a larger genre,” Martin said, citing Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell as other key influences. Despite his admiration for Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy, Martin has some reservations. “From a 2021 perspective, I think Gibson’s remix of the hard black fiction in these books is a success, but it comes with a lot of conservative baggage that doesn’t seem relevant anymore. For example, his interest in Japan as a rising power feels aligned with an emerging cocktail of fascination and xenophobia that was common in 1980s pop culture. “

So what does Martin think of the game’s most famous cyberpunk game? “Actually, a lot of what’s bad about Cyberpunk 2077 has little to do with the genre. The corporate practices of CD Projekt Red, its eagerness to promote toxicity within its communities, the hype machine – all of this created a miasma around the genre that will take time to dissipate.

Martin also believes that “Cyberpunk 2077 is quite unambitious. It takes most of its ideas from its source material, the TTRPG Cyberpunk 2020. This game was a fantasy power pastiche of cyberpunk imagery and ideas, which hasn’t aged well, so 2077 is also a genre pastiche. that feels incredibly dated and out of reach. “

A bar in Cyberpunk 2077

One of Martin’s main hopes for Citizen Sleeper is to challenge the pessimistic worldview that permeates the genre. “One of the accusations I always see made against equally dystopian cyberpunk or sci-fi is that it’s meant to be a warning, not a fantasy. We’re supposed to read these books thinking, “What a shitty place to live, I hope the world doesn’t end like this.” For me, this is nonsense. To speak of Gibson again, it is clear that he was writing about a world that fascinated and attracted him.

“I have seen my work before being accused of being gloomy, of seeing the future with pessimism. But in fact, I see my work as a matter of hope, of finding a place, a reason to continue, the importance of forming communities and bonds.

Citizen Sleeper should be released on PC in 2022. You can check out the Steam page here.

Nobody’s favorite game mechanic, weapon degradation will make a comeback in Dying Light 2. As producer Szymon Strauss explained, in its setting – two decades after the previous game – things have continued to wear down, and “People are starting to build stuff out of scraps and other material on the fly.”

Sustainability systems are often controversial, usually thanks to games that put them in place and have equipment that crumbles in minutes instead of months. (One of the only things I didn’t like about System Shock 2 was the way the guns broke after a handful of uses, although that was both readjusted and made optional in one. patch.) Most of the time, weapon degradation just means more menu management while juggling an inventory full of spares and repair kits.

The first big E3-type THQ Nordic Showcase aired yesterday as part of the company’s 10th anniversary, and the publisher promised six big announcements at the show, including long-dormant franchise suites. It delivered some interesting titles like Jagged Alliance 3, but it looks like THQ Nordic still has at least 28 games to reveal.

The demo stream revealed Jagged Alliance 3, the Destroy All Humans leak! 2 remake, Superpower 3 strategy simulation sequel, MX vs. ATV: Legends, surprise sci-fi sequel Outcast 2: A New Beginning and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake – a sort of Battle for Bikini Bottom follow-up of the year last: Rehydrated.

Six interesting games, but fans might have been surprised by some of the franchises that didn’t make an appearance. A new TimeSplitters was confirmed in May, Dead Island 2 has long been MIA, Darksiders 4 is pretty much certain, and a new Red Faction game called Evolution was leaked last year but has yet to be announced. Even a new Kingdoms of Amalur game could be on the cards – there’s still a new expansion coming this year, after all.

THQ Nordic is well aware that it has a lot of franchises that people want sequels that haven’t been announced yet. The publisher took to Twitter shortly after the showcase to confirm that after the reveal of all six games, it still had 28 games in development that had yet to be announced.

As to when any of these games will be revealed, he responded to a fan with confirmation that he will be announcing some of these titles “soon”. As for when and what, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Hopefully THQ Nordic will also reveal more details about Jagged Alliance 3 and the other games being announced as well – as none of them received even a vague release date.

What you need to know about North Carolina

North Carolina bounced back from a disappointing Week 1 and expressed frustration over Georgia State last weekend. The Heels hurt the Panthers at home at 59-17. The contest was almost over by the end of the third quarter, when UNC had established a 45-10 advantage.

Quarterback Sam Howell had a dynamite game for UNC, scoring three touchdowns and 352 yards on 29 attempts as well as rushing for two touchdowns and 104 yards. Near the top of the highlight reel was Howell’s 57-yard TD bomb against WR Antoine Green in the first quarter. Howell will need to be at the top of his game again this week, as its offensive line has already allowed eight sacks in its first two games, while Virginia has only allowed opponents to complete 55% of their passes.

What you need to know about Virginie

Virginia really established herself as one of the ACC’s best offensives last week, scoring 557 yards against Illinois last Saturday. Quarterback Brennan Armstrong had a stellar game for Virginia as he had five touchdowns and 405 yards on 36 attempts, in addition to 31 rushing yards.

While the Cavs have had a host of players taking transfers in the backfield, offense is all about passing. Keytaon Thompson and Billy Kemp each have ten receptions, and second student in red shirt Dontayvion Wicks leads all UVA wide receivers with 163 yards so far this season. Defensively, Virginia is tied for 17th in the country in passing yards, and held opposing passers to just 5.1 yards per attempt.

How to choose between North Carolina and Virginia

The model has simulated North Carolina against Virginia 10,000 times and the results are available. We can tell you that the model looks at total points and it also generated a point distribution choice that hits in over 50% of the simulations. . You can only see the model choice on SportsLine.

Victoria 3 is the next big strategy game coming from Paradox Interactive, and one that many had hoped to see for so long that it was a meme, for a while. I’m pretty excited too, but one thing we’ve all been waiting to see is how the game is going to handle the extremely sensitive subject of slavery.

This week’s dev diary, written by game director Martin ‘Whizzington’ Anward, explores exactly that topic, and it’s a bit of a big topic. He begins by discussing the “philosophy of the studio behind [slavery’s] representation ”and the reasons why other historical games might tend to avoid tackling the subject head-on. Anward explains why this would not have been appropriate for Victoria 3, since slavery is “a horrible crime against humanity”.

“It was an important political issue of the time and a major catalyst for several important conflicts,” he says. “Most notably the American Civil War, which would be oddly without context if slavery didn’t play an important role in the game. The other reason, and the most important one, is that through our Pop system, we try to represent every human individual on the planet since 1836, so what statement would we make if we simply wrote down all of the enslaved individuals in history, or reduced them to an abstract set of modifiers? “

Victoria 3 treats slaves as a type of profession rather than a type of people. It works differently from other professions, however, the main difference being that slaves can no longer choose to no longer be slaves, unless the country in which they reside changes its slavery laws.

Slavery laws come in four different types in an attempt to capture the political landscape of the 1830s. A country can have a fully functioning slave trade, adopt “debt slavery” (where poor pops will slowly convert into slaves) abolish slavery all together, or have a “legacy” of slavery, which aims to model countries like the United States and Brazil, where existing slaves were kept but no new slaves were imported from abroad.

Victoria 3 is also not going to back down from the economic impact of slavery, although slave labor in particular does not directly benefit the player – rather it benefits specific types of pop, such as aristocrats. Depending on a country’s tax laws, a player may never directly benefit from slavery, even if he allows it to persist within his nation.

An active slave trade also won’t be something the player can ignore – there were many anti-slavery (abolitionist) movements already in the 1830s, and Britain is particularly known for its active use of the Royal. Navy. eradicate the transatlantic slave trade.

These movements – which will be represented as interest groups within the game – can cause a lot of internal political unrest, and the slave populations themselves will also generate regular pressure through unrest and unrest. Wanting to change a nation’s slavery laws can also be used as a reason for going to war.

There are a lot of things to unpack this week’s dev diary, and other developer answers add additional context to how Victoria 3 handles this topic – we highly recommend that you read it. Future dev journals will come back to this issue, as there will be a blog dedicated to events like the Civil War, which was closely related to this issue.

Database entries from today’s Geforce Now leak indicate new proprietary and third-party games are joining Microsoft’s PC library. Among those entries are titles like Gears of War 6, Halo 5: Guardians, and the New Fable.

Nvidia’s client for Geforce Now appears ready to handle unannounced titles from the industry’s major publishers and platform holders. The full list includes other non-Microsoft PC games such as Chrono Cross Remaster, God of War, and Resident Evil Remake. Windows Central has since reported on how some of these leaks for Microsoft projects line up, with reporter Jez Corden citing previous sources on those games that corroborate the new information in the database.

Related: Xbox Game Pass Is The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Gaming

Microsoft database entries, provided by Pavel Djundik, include the unannounced sequel to Gears of War, Gears 6 and a PC version for Halo 5: Guardians, the only currently released Halo not available in The Master Chief Collection. The list may be stale with canceled projects or placeholders, as indicated by a Scalebound list.

Some of Microsoft’s listings also include games that always use a code name, but these entries seem to be what gives the listing credibility in the Windows Central report. Microsoft Game Studios placeholders list Oxide Unannounced, Project Woodstock, Project Holland, and Project Typhoon. The Fable reboot, revealed last year, was previously Project Holland. Project Typhoon would be the last game from Avalance Studios, Contraband. While both of these titles point to games that have since changed their names, they may be remnants of a long list of projects still in development and not announced. Scalebound was a PlatinumGames project canceled in 2017.

Old database entries are not confirmations of these plans, and publishers, studios and Nvidia itself have yet to comment on the validity of the leaks. Some games may seem like overkill, but both Microsoft and Sony have seen a slow and steady increase in PC support. Uncharted 4 exclusive to PlayStation and Lost Legacy, just received confirmation of its launch on PC in 2022. Microsoft also continued to roll out support for the Halo series, launching Halo 4 on PC at the end of the year. last.

The organizers of the speedrunning Games Done Quick charity marathon have always taken the COVID-19 pandemic seriously. While other major gaming event planners have attempted to host in-person events while imposing various restrictions, the speedrun scene has not seen an in-person GDQ event since January of last year. All of the GDQ events since that time have taken place entirely online, which hasn’t stopped them from amassing millions of dollars in donations. Now it looks like GDQ organizers aren’t planning to resume in-person events anytime soon, as they just announced that the upcoming Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 marathon will also take place online.

The organizers of the GDQ announced their current plans on their Twitter as well as their website. According to their statement, the organizers “made this decision after much deliberation and risk analysis of holding an in-person event.” They said “too much danger and uncertainty stemming from COVID-19” still exists for them to comfortably host an in-person event at this time. They thanked the community for their “support and patience as we continue to assess the ever-changing environment and work together in pursuit of a return to in-person events in the future.”

Additional background to the decision

Notably, the AGDQ event moved to Orlando, Florida in early 2020 as international attendees could get there more easily compared to previous event locations in Virginia and Maryland. This decision may have made sense at the time, but given that Florida is now a major hotspot for COVID-19 cases, it has become much more difficult for GDQ organizers to organize an event in person in any form.

The fact that Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 is happening online will surely disappoint those eager to meet in person. But since COVID-19 remains a threat and has only become more deadly thanks to the emergence of new variants, it ultimately seems like the best option at this time. Viewers can tune in to the event when it airs January 9-16.

In rural, pristine Providence Oaks, Oregon, circa 1986, a woman delivers the mail.

The premise of Lake is no stranger to indie gamers: A software developer trades his career in a big city for an idyllic life in a small town. What is perhaps interesting to Oregonians, however, is how Lake was created by Gamious, a company founded by two brothers from the Netherlands.

In the game description on the Steam video game distribution site, Lake is billed as an “escape to a beautiful, rustic environment without cell phones or the Internet”. The marketing surrounding the game reiterates this promise, describing a silent alternative to the conventional noise of the video game world.

Providence Oaks is, indeed, rustic in beauty. And it’s a testament to the creators’ love for the region that, despite being in one hemisphere, Gamious has created such an instantly recognizable rendition of the Pacific Northwest. Aesthetic touches as small as contemporary Oregon license plates and as obvious as VCR tapes from Jaws and Nightmare on Elm Street reinforce the frame of the period piece while the naturalistic landscapes and an omnipresent mountain in the distance lend an aura of the Pacific Northwest.

Unfortunately, this all only looks like a frame. Although the story takes place over seven hours and 14 days of play, Lake contains only the lightest sketch of his characters.

The narrative centers on Meredith Weiss, the aforementioned IT worker, and her indecision over whether to stay in her hometown or return to the competing IT society for her time.

In practice, this should mean that the separate interactions between the characters in the story would be designed to either show Meredith something that is missing from her life or shut the door of Providence Oaks to her.

However, while the people of Providence Oaks are memorable, they are only so because they each have some sort of calling card quirk. There’s the cynical older woman, the young computer geek, the over-excited artistic childhood friend, et al. None of them have enough screen time or meaningful dialogue to become more than their archetype. Even Meredith is ultimately a character with little internal life.

With so many characters at surface level, Lake begins to feel strangely disconnected from the real world. The virtual city is on the verge of strangeness.

That said, Lake is full of quiet moments, and it feels like a game designed to shine more in its negative space than in its actual content.

Driving around Providence Oaks, listening to the hoarse radio and rolling the tires of the mail truck, it feels like one is meant to be gazing. The question is: contemplate what?

Lake tells a story that ultimately seems to say that life is unpredictable and that we have to roll with the punches in order to find where we truly belong. It is a noble theme, which has been the basis of many great literatures and narratives in all mediums, but Lake doesn’t seem to know what to do except… report it.

Lake is like a beautiful idyllic postcard. In all of its intentions and executions it portrays the image of pastoral Americana and the fulfillment of a quiet life. However, postcards are intended to be as ephemeral as the messages they convey. And very few would choose to consider a postcard for seven hours of play.

TO PLAY: Lake is available on Steam starting Wednesday, September 1.

It is Leisure Suit Larry 2: In Search Of Love (In Several Wrong Places), Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in pursuit of thrilling pecs, and Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti does a little undercover work. Where is the fourth game you ask? It’s kind of a story.

Al Lowe, the creator of the series, intended to make a trilogy, giving the third game an ending that tied everything together. Also, due to the crisis it took to finish Larry 3 on time, he was fed up with it all and said at the time that he would never do Leisure Suit Larry 4. When Lowe changed Of opinion later, he came up with the idea of going straight to Leisure Suit Larry 5, in which Larry has amnesia and has forgotten the value of an entire set of adventures.
