While “Squid Game” is considered one of Netflix’s biggest hits, news of a contest series inspired by Korean drama has drawn criticism from some fans who say the premise misses the mark.

In the series, contestants burdened with immense debt compete in twisted and violent children’s games for millions of dollars. There can only be one winner, and those who lose die.

With “Squid Game: The Challenge,” Netflix said in its Release that “the worst fate is to return home with open hands” (i.e. not death).

“You’ve seen the drama, now is your chance to be a part of Netflix’s greatest social experiment!” Netflix writes in its casting call. “This oversized unscripted spectacle transforms the scripted world of drama into reality. Real gamers will be immersed in the iconic Squid Game universe and never know what awaits them. Here they will take part in a jaw-dropping series of games in to become the Sole Survivor* and walk away with a life-changing cash prize. With a fortune to be won, who will be an ally, who will you trust and who will you betray in this ultimate test of character? *Please note: Win or lose, all players will walk away unscathed. But if you win, you win big!”

When news of the reality competition spin-off broke last week, some on social media pointed out the irony of such a competition.

“The game is meant to represent the commodification of suffering by the privileged, and how watching people struggle for money and their lives is seen as entertainment for people who will never have to experience such things,” he said. said Mika Winder, 16, of Oregon. “Doing an actual version goes against the whole message of the original show in an almost comedic way.”

Others echoed similar sentiments on social media, including one person who tweeted“Did Netflix even watch the show? Did they make sense of it?

Netflix and production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden, the show’s co-producers, did not respond to request for comment.

How the competition show will work

The reality show will feature 456 English-speaking gamers from around the world who will compete for a cash prize of $4.56 million, Netflix said.

Details of what the games will involve were not revealed in Netflix’s press release or the show’s casting application.

For some “Squid Game” fans, like Dracy Peters, the reality competition series is an opportunity to “have fun.”

Peters, 23, from Louisiana, said he was applying to be a contestant to test his knowledge of the games.

“The show is a work of fiction with an elaborate plot, where the characters had to risk their lives for the money,” Peters said. “Here, the worst fate a player can have is supposed to go home empty-handed.”

But for others, like Winder, it’s a rough patch.

“People competing are projected out into the rest of the world for cheap thrills and it’s a parody of the original story,” she said. “It shows how people, especially in America, ignore the plot of something and the metaphors behind it, in order to make money.”

The show drew strong reactions before

This isn’t the first time the original dystopian TV show has garnered a strong reaction.

When the nine-episode thriller premiered on September 21, “Squid Game” snagged the No. 1 spot in 94 countries, including its home base of South Korea. There, the show struck a particular nerve to highlight a deep-rooted problem: debt and the eternal struggle to pay it off.

And soon after its debut, companies hoping to capitalize on its popularity rushed to incorporate the series into ad campaigns – a move seen as crude due to the Korean thriller’s sensitive themes.

“Squid Game” also inspired celebrities to recreate scenes from the show, sparking similar controversy.

In November, Chrissy Teigen was reprimanded for throwing a “Squid Game” themed party with celebrity guests dressed as players from the hit.

That same month, YouTuber MrBeast built sets inspired by the show and had contestants compete for $456,000 in a video uploaded to his channel, which has since racked up more than 260 million views.

A Twitter The user pointed out that he doesn’t think he’s “never seen the moral stance of a show as completely misunderstood by the general public as Squid Game has been.”

The first series of squid game has left fans everywhere wanting more – but an update from one of the show’s stars could temper expectations ahead of possible future seasons.

A second series has been unofficially “announced” by Netflix, as the streaming service’s CEO, Fred Sarandossaid “the Squid Game universe has just begun” earlier this month.

However, amid concerns from some fans that a follow-up won’t reach the incredible heights of the first, star Lee jung-jae seemed to echo those sentiments in a recent interview.

During a conversation with PEOPLE earlier this week, Lee even claimed that squid game creator, producer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t drawn a full plan yet script for the supposed second season.

“It looks like he’s [Dong-hyuk] really struggling to write the script,” Lee said.

“I actually wanted to ask the director Hwang about that too,” he said of what to expect in season two.

The South Korean thriller was the surprise hit of 2021, breaking stream and watch time records on Netflix.

Such immediate success left many viewers wondering if the same magic could possibly be captured in future episodes.

A recent article in The Gamer added to those fears, after the site published an article about the detrimental effect unnecessary sequels can have on beloved TV drama “One Season Wonder.”

However, while Lee’s comments about a possible second season are cause for concern for many, the man himself maintains that he can’t wait to see what happens. Hwang and the rest of the creative team can reminisce.

“But you know, when there’s that gift you want… you’re waiting for it [and] you’re so excited to get it, you don’t want to get it bit by bit,” Lee added.

“You want the whole package at once, so I’m just waiting for the director Hwang to give me the whole script, and I’m really excited for that.

Lee confirmed to this Hwang “has a lot of different ideas” even though the structure of the series isn’t fully fleshed out yet.

The director has already teased some information about the second series, conceding that the protagonist, Come on hunand its masked antagonist The man in front will both be back for it.

Netflix also announced the launch of a new reality TV show based on the hit series, titled “Squid Game: The Challenge”. It will see members of the public participate in Squid Game-As challenges, with the eventual winner pocketing a $4.5 million prize.

As for the drama series, very little is known about the future of the franchise which continues to enthrall audiences around the world.

Fans just hope that squid game the eventual return will be worth the wait.

The Duplicate Bridge column is compiled weekly by news team reporter Dale Anderson. The print version ceased to appear on Saturdays in The Buffalo News in March 2020 when the pandemic forced local bridge clubs to halt head-to-head play.

These days, you can find it in two places online. Google “Duplicate Bridge” plus the current Saturday date and it should bring up a link to it on buffalonews.com, the Buffalo News website. Another place to find it is on Dale Anderson’s bridge blog at http://newsdupli.blogspot.com/

The deadline for submission of scores and reviews is Tuesday evening. Email danderson@buffnews.com or dahotwings@aol.com. The office phone is 716-849-4420.

A master of golden life, Dale Anderson has a career total of over 2,900 masterpoints. Still playing exclusively online these days, he hasn’t encountered as much drama for his bridge blog as there was in face-to-face competition, but he does write occasionally about his quest for the next measure of achievement, Sapphire Life Master (3,500 points), and other bridge adventures here.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Major League Baseball has received its fair share of criticism for changes aimed at getting younger fans interested in the game, but there was one this season that generated rave reviews.

MLB expanded allowing players to be micked and interviewed during games after doing so on a limited basis from 2017 to 2020. It became a weekly occurrence on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and produced some funny moments.

“I was pleasantly surprised that he picked up and maintained momentum, as this isn’t the first time we’ve asked for and had a collaboration,” ESPN vice president of production Phil Orlins said. . “So to see it kick off this year, with tangible enthusiasm from the players to be a part of it, has been a nice breakthrough.

Fox first conducted the in-game interviews with the players during the 2017 All-Star Game in Miami. ESPN followed in 2018-19 in spring training before having him in limited capacity during the shortened 2020 regular season.

political cartoons

He was suspended last year due to frayed relationships with the MLB Players Association. But now that there is labor peace again, the mic is back with ESPN seeing most of the benefits so far.

ESPN analyst David Cone said having players on the mic also gives them a chance to show their personality and increase the marketing of the game.

“Their personalities need to be shown more like other sports, and that’s the best opportunity,” he said. “It’s great that the opportunity was there and that it was taken. Each of the players presented a side of their personality that otherwise would not have been seen.

Players have also shown that they can continue playing at a high level with the earpiece and mic on. The only comparisons to what MLB and ESPN do is having NASCAR drivers interviewed during races or players interviewed at Premier Lacrosse League games.

“We don’t know what that player is going to say or what the outcome will be. We’ve had situations where Francisco Lindor receives a ball on the ground, and he was scared to death to kick it while Max Scherzer was on the mound, and he’s on the mic with us. And then the relief on the human side because he was happy to have played along,” ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez said.

In addition to Lindor discussing New York Mets teammate Scherzer’s intensity on the mound, Cincinnati’s Joey Votto made an impromptu play-by-play from first base in the opener against Atlanta.

Boston outfielder Kiké Hernandez discussed whether he would throw home or second base if he had a ball on him. When the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo had a base hit to center, fans could hear Hernandez coming on the ball and then making a hard throw home.

Lindor, who was mike in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 1, said there wasn’t much adjustment from what he normally does during a game.

“I speak during games anyway, so it’s not something different,” he said. “Fans hear a bit of interaction and how I deal with the game and it’s always fun for the fans.”

Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout is set to be this week’s mic player when the Los Angeles Angels host the Mets.

“It’s definitely different for me because I don’t talk to anybody out there (in the outfield) but I think it’s good for baseball. I’m just going to have fun with it,” Trout said.

The only positions that haven’t yet are pitcher and receiver. ESPN announcer Karl Ravech also noted that it might also be interesting to have a referee do it for a week.

“I think the unknown of any individual is what makes this all great,” he said. “We think we know some personalities and they’re going to be great. We think we know some personalities that are probably not conducive to this or are proving amazing at this kind of side game.

“We learned a lot about Bryce Harper when he was DH. He gave us so much insight from a star player that you wouldn’t get otherwise. And yet Harper, for the most part, is probably seen as a quiet guy. Took us so much away from him because we’re talking about baseball, you know, his comfort zone.”

Mic’d up is likely to expand to other shows as well. MLB chief revenue officer Noah Garden says Fox will do it at next month’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles, while opportunities are also there for Sunday afternoon Peacock games and coverage. from Apple TV+ on Friday nights.

“We have always worked with our media partners to innovate in our broadcasts and I think it is important for us to continue in this way. Those went well and you keep moving forward,” he said.

Academics and account managers. Ivy League graduates. Teachers. Mild-mannered Philadelphia rideshare driver Ryan Long has beaten them all during his 16-game winning streak on Danger! with a combination of luck, strategic bets and mastery of certain categories.

But Long’s journey on the popular game show ended Monday night when he finished in third place behind National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Ahasic and actress Stephanie Garrison.

Long, 39, closed the gap with Ahasic entering Final Jeopardy trailing $3,400 and facing the following Greek mythology index:

Among the Argonauts seeking the Golden Fleece, these two of the same family were from Sparta according to Homer.

Long replied “Who are Agamemnon and Menelaus?” which was incorrect, leaving him with only $1. Ahasic answered correctly with “Who are Castor and Pollux”, winning the game and knocking Long down with a final score of $18,401.

Long ends his Danger! running with the ninth-most consecutive wins in the show’s history, dating back to 2003, when a five-game cap was lifted. Overall, he will take home $300,400 before taxes – $299,400 in winnings and $1,000 for finishing third on Monday.

Long called the gains “life changing,” but he’s not looking to make any sensational purchases. Instead, after meeting with financial advisors, he plans to pay off existing debt.

“To me, paying the bills and paying for the car is exciting,” Long said.

Long’s success on Danger! came at an opportune time. He was forced to quit his job as a paratransit driver for SEPTA’s Personalized Community Transportation Program last year after a difficult battle with COVID-19, which still affects him. He turned to driving for Uber, Lyft and DoorDash to support his 8-year-old son, Nathan, who made the necklace Long wore on the show.

Not much has changed since Long, other than being recognized as a local Danger! star around town (although Twitter refused a request to verify his account). The show only pays contestants after they air on TV, so Long hasn’t received the money he knew he made months ago.

“I have my head on a pivot right now, but I have nothing,” Long joked.

Despite the defeat, Long’s Danger! career is not over. He will return in the fall for the show’s Tournament of Champions, where he will face Amy Schneider, Mattea Roach and the other most successful competitors of this year. Long said he was looking forward to meeting everyone, but admitted not following their Danger! runs too close.

“I actually don’t watch the show religiously,” Long said. “I grew up watching the show, and I’ll catch it here and there, but most of the time I’m working.”

Sitcom star Mayim Bialik hosted all 17 of Long’s matches. He said he was angered by the criticism she received online as one of the show’s guest hosts.

“It seems like a lot of people are looking at Mayim online and I find that really, really unfair,” Long said. “I’m not picking a horse or anything, but some of the reviews online have been really exaggerated. She was super, super nice during my time on the show.

Bialik shares hosting duties with the former Danger! champ Ken Jennings — who holds the series title “Greatest of All Time” — for the remainder of Season 38, which ends in July. After that, the show will decide on a permanent host to replace the late Alex Trebek, who died in November 2020 of pancreatic cancer.

As for tips, Long has a simple suggestion for those who want to compete on Danger! – just apply.

“People should just try. They make it easier than ever to take the online test. If you think you have it, don’t get discouraged and think you’re out of luck,” Long said. “If I was on TV and doing something, then a lot of other people could be too.”

The Battle Pass would be rebranded as the Darth Vader skin, while the Indiana Jones could appear as an additional outfit.

This is in addition to the Assemble Snap costume, which appears to be fully customizable.

Along with an all-new Battle Pass, Season 3 will bring a series of updates to the map.

With the rise of Darth Vader, chances are we’ll see the famous Star Wars location appear for the first time.

Then there’s the regular update, which will contain a myriad of bug fixes and gameplay tweaks. Based on the Fortnite Trello board, Epic will fix the problem of enemy fire, as well as vending machines.

Express Online will keep this story updated with all recent developments, including confirmed Season 3 release times, patch notes, and maintenance news.
