Leaks often cause a game’s release date to be postponed so that the company can regain control of the situation, but some can be extremely detrimental to a game’s performance upon release.

Some leaks can be quickly dismissed if the funder does not provide evidence to back them up. They’re more speculative than real, allowing developers to continue developing a game without worrying too much. Problems will arise, however, when a funder has evidence to validate the information it offers. Video game content is leaked all the time, but some leaks are far more shocking than others.

The production of Fallout 4 was shrouded in a lot of secrecy during its development, and although Bethesda did its best to conceal most of the game’s content until its official release, a writer from the gaming news website Kotaku pulled it off to slip through the cracks.

To prove the leaks were real, they recorded a video of themselves booting up the game and playing a brief part of the story. They then advertised their multiple copies on Facebook Marketplace in a bid to cash in on Square Enix’s efforts. Most fans initially doubted the leaks, but the evidence of its legitimacy quickly became too much to ignore once the endgame started to appear online.
