Steam bans games that allow cryptocurrency and NFT trading

will no longer allow games that allow (non-fungible token) and trade via blockchain. steam for Steamworks users and partners now states that they should not publish “applications based on blockchain technology that issue or enable the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” on Steam. The rule was added at some point after October 6, according to one version of the page .

Some developers have talked about the rule. SpacePirate Games, the studio behind a sci-fi action-adventure title called Age of rust, Valve was starting blockchain games from Steam “because NFTs are valuable.” Some puzzles in Age of rust, which is in development, will reward players with NFTs as achievements. “Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that may have real value on their platform,” SpacePirate . The developer plans to release the game elsewhere.

It’s unclear how many games already on Steam will be affected. Looking for “” and “»Shows 14 and 64 results respectively. However, not all of them necessarily allow real world trading. Crypto mining simulator, for example, lets you pretend you’re mining cryptocurrency, which sounds like a barrel of laughs.

Sports Grind Entertainment has contacted Steam for more details on this rule, including why it was introduced. NFT scams , and unless you know what you’re doing, it’s not hard to get burned out in crypto trading. That said, Valve does allow people to trade virtual goods for Steam Wallet funds through, so SpacePirate’s belief that Steam doesn’t allow items of real value doesn’t fully hold up.
