Why Bethesda refused the video game version of Game of Thrones for Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is set to end ten years after its release. Bethesda recently announced the release of an Anniversary Edition of the game and DLC. Skyrim was one of the most famous games of the past decade and is an integral part of the game’s history for its incredible visuals and nostalgia.

It might not be known to the majority of people, but Bethesda has also been given a chance to turn George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones into a game series instead of Skyrim. Players would have loved an RPG translation of Game of Thrones, given that it has been portrayed in several other forms of media, including a TV series. But Bethesda did not seize the opportunity.

Bethesda chooses Skyrim over possible Game of Thrones RPG

EGMi: the digital magazine reported that Bethesda was initially approached to create games based on Martin’s novels. Of course, this news had excited fans of the franchise, and Bethesda was more than thrilled to take on this project and accepted it as a challenge.

Todd Howard, Director of Bethesda Games, said, “With A Song of Ice and Fire, we said ‘We want to do this!’, he adds again, “The people in our studio liked it, and it kinda crept into what we were doing” as cited by VG247.

However, the impending problem was the development of Skyrim. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was in its progressive stages of development, and doing a similar series would kill its chance to flourish in the gaming industry.

Howard explains this by saying, “We wanted to make our world. This is where we wanted to spend time. Before we even did Skyrim, there was a conversation with the folks at George RR Martin. They thought it would be a good game – and so did we – but then we wondered if this was where we wanted to spend our time. It was tempting, however.

While we can’t see a Bethesda RPG version of Game of Thrones, a Telltale version of the novel series does exist. Released in 2014, this game has been fairly well received within the gaming community.
